Camel Welfare & Care

22 camels. Bedouin family owned. Max 4 hours of work per day per animal. We'll show you the stable if you ask.

Why the welfare question actually matters

Tourism camels in the Gulf have a mixed reputation — not every operator treats them well. We write this page because the welfare question is real, and guests deserve honest answers before they pay for a ride.

Our camel stable is a Bedouin family operation, not a commercial fleet. The same family owns, trains and cares for the camels, and has done so for three generations. The herd currently has 22 adult dromedaries, rotated so no individual camel works more than 4 hours on any day.

What welfare looks like in practice

4-hour daily limit

No camel works more than 4 hours of rides per day. Rotation is tracked in a logbook.

💧

Fresh water

Clean water available at all times at the stable.

🌾

Proper feed

Commercial camel feed + fresh alfalfa + desert browse.

🏥

Vet checks

Monthly visit from a large-animal vet. Teeth, feet, back, weight.

🛖

Shade & rest

Each stall has shade and a clean bed of straw.

🎓

Trained handlers

Bedouin-family handlers who grew up with these exact animals.

What we don't do

No overloading

Max weight per camel is 150 kg total. We turn guests away if the load would exceed that.

No ankle tethers

Our camels are not tied by the ankle to stand at photo spots. They wait freely.

No public beach camels

We don't run camels on Dubai beaches where they stand in sun with no shade.

No mass tourism groups

No more than 8 riders per handler at any time.

Frequently asked

Can I visit the stable before booking?+

Yes — drop us a WhatsApp message and we'll arrange a 30-minute stable visit. You'll meet the handlers, see the living conditions and decide if you want to book.

How can I tell if a camel is being treated well?+

Look for: clean coat, clear eyes, no sores on the withers, alert posture, calm behaviour around handlers. A camel that shies away from its handler is usually a bad sign.

Why do camels kneel when you dismount?+

That's trained behaviour — the camel kneels on the handler's command so you can safely get off. It's normal and comfortable for the animal.

Do the camels work in summer?+

Yes but on a much reduced schedule — only sunrise and sunset slots, never midday. Summer also increases vet visits because heat stress is the main welfare risk we monitor.
